Monthly Meeting

When: The last Wednesday of every month from September through May at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Online through Zoom video conferencing
Who: These meetings are open to anyone interested in attending

Our monthly meetings are a time to get together and share what we've been working on. We also use the monthly get-together to plan future events, including retreats and workshops. We often have time to write together and extend the meeting past "closing time" to go for coffee.

Special Events

Author Workshops

Picture
A workshop with Maureen Ulrich.
The group usually plans at least one workshop each year with a published author. We have been pleased to host authors like Lynda Monahan, Linda Aksomitis, Ed Willett and Sigmund Brower in the past. Each workshop generally has a specific theme. Recent workshops have covered topics of memoir writing, thick vs. thin writing, and the publishing process.

Workshops are usually open to the public. There is generally a small fee for non-group members to attend.

There are currently no upcoming author workshops scheduled, but we are planning some critiquing workshops and a group discussion workshop this year.

Critiquing Workshops

Sharing feedback on each other's writing.
We meet periodically to give detailed positive feedback and constructive criticism for pieces submitted by group members. The limit is 3000 words, double-spaced. These critique workshops have helped us to bond and grow as writers.

We offer each other suggestions in a way that is constructive and uplifting, not in a way that will tear another writer down. Check out our Critiquing Guidelines here.

Critiquing workshops are open to group members only and are typically held four times a year.

The next critiquing workshop will be in May 2016.

Coffeehouses/Readings

Picture
At least once or twice per year, the group enjoys hosting a coffeehouse and reading night where we share our work with the community.

Coffeehouses and Readings are open to the public. The coffeehouses include an "open mic" session where aspiring and established writers can share their work. All readers and listeners are welcome!

We currently have no coffeehouses scheduled.

Group Get-Togethers

The group Christmas party.
We enjoy getting together several times a year outside of the general meeting structure. These get-togethers are a time to share our writing with each other, play games and have fun.  At a minimum, we will have a Christmas party and a wind-up party each year.

Parties and Get-togethers are for group members and family only.

Retreats

Group Members, Spring Retreat 2016
Weekend retreats - one in the fall and one in the spring - are a great way to focus on a writing task and churn out 10,000 words.  Retreat participants write, share, talk about writing, eat and write some more. Costs are minimal, food is generally delicious potluck, and the companionship is great.

Retreats are for group members only and are generally a Thursday night - Sunday Morning affair held at the Mother Teresa Centre in Kenosee Provincial Park.

The next retreat will be in October 20-23, 2016 .
